GoList! Food Shopping App Duration: 1 month Tools: Balsamiq, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator

The Project

My apps name is GoList! and the tagline is “Shopping Simplified”. My app organizes a list of grocery items to minimize trips and keep the busy person on the go from forgetting what they need to pick up. It also allows user to share a list with family, friends and others to help contribute to better time management.

Methods: surveys, interviews, wireframes, prototyping

Trying to manage grocery shopping and time for preparing and cooking a meal can be really hard to juggle. I had the idea to design a grocery list app that would include four functions it would perform. The first one being my app would catalog items needed to purchase Second, the app would have a shopping cart to add items to. Third, it would allow the lists to be shareable with others and fourth, it would keep track of item history for future purchases.

Research

Competitor Analysis

I looked at several grocery list apps and I really wanted something that was easy to manage and readily available on the phone. With a hip and simple design.

Surveys & Interview

I looked at what my targeted audience would be and what their needs would be. I surveyed and interviewed 10-15 people on what they would look for in a grocery list app and gathered the information. As well as what items they mainly shopped for regularly.

Key Findings & Insight

A few of the needs included: what items could be ordered, if the list could be shareable, can they reorder previous items/lists and if it would save time.

Define

Personas

Four potential roles are busy working mom on the go, mom planning healthy home food meals, mom with big family and limited food budget, eco-friendly mom lowering families foodprint. An Example is Lawyer Paula from Buenos Aires, age 32 who just moved to San Francisco is a mother of a 4 year old. She lives in an apartmet on the 6th floor. She's active and loves yoga. Doesn’t have the time to go out and shop for necessary items.

I started mapping out the design of the app through users journey while navigating the app to get an idea of the simplest way possible. All of this with the feedback in mind.

Ideate

Mockups

I then Sketched out some mid-fidelity mockups to iron out anything I might have missed as well as visually see where things sat on the app. Also checked and received feedback from other users I had test their journey through. This was very helpful and gave a better understanding of where things headed.

Testing

Test

I was able to create a few hi-fidelity mockups through Adobe XD. I had 5-10 users test it out and gather feedback.

Conclusion

This project was a great way of testing my skills as a designer and utilizing what I learned so far. By no means is this finalized. Some of the prototyping needs to run smoother. I also forgot to incorporate some other ideas I never finished. Some challenges I came across were iconography sizing and the navigation back to certain lists.
