MiniBurger is a food ordering delivery app that I created as part of my UI/UX specialization course at Coursera. As the main UI/UX designer for this project, I was able to design the project from ideation to the finalized version through research, ideation and UI/UX design principles.
Going to school and trying manage your time and budget can be really tough to do. I was challenged to come up with a mobile food delivery app that would meet the needs of college students in the San Luis Obispo area.
Research
Competitor Analysis
By first researching what the food choice would be, I was able to look at restaurants surrounding the area to get a sense of what delivery services were already present, in order to provide a different take on food delivery that was a bit more elevated yet affordable and not pizza. Sliders were the food I chose because of the ingredients being easy to keep stocked and how customizable they are.
Surveys & Interview
In order for me to get an idea of what kind of needs my target audience would want to see in the app I interviewed and surveyed 15-20 people. I wanted to gather information on what customizable slider options they wanted to see and what some of the issues they see in other food ordering apps.
Key Findings & Insight
A few of the needs included: If they could order food online, would it be affordable, speedy delivery, if they would be able to find out if the restaurant delivers to their area, able to track their order through mobile device method, would they be able to customize an order trough list of available options, and if they would be able to contact customer service on food order issues. These findings helped guide the process of the project.
Define
Personas
I created three personas in order to use as a way to help guide the project according to the needs of user. the three different personas were “the gamer” , ‘the studious” and “the athlete”.
Ideate
Sitemap
I conducted a card sort in order to see the steps the user would expect the content to be displayed at and was able to create the sitemap to further help with the project. I mapped out the structure and organized the steps and pages the user would navigate the app.
Sketch
Low-fidelity sketches were sketched out before creating these mid-fidelity mockups. I created these using the program Balsamiq. I edited the the screens and eliminated a few to keep the design simple and quick to navigate through with the user feedback in mind. I then created a prototype and tested it out on 3 users for more feedback.
Test
Testing
This part of the project was crucial in finding out what was missing and what was working. It helped refined the user’s journey a lot better. I recorded some negative and positive things away from their experience.
Conclusion
Overall this project was lot of fun and a great learning experience for the fundamentals of design. It was a great way to understand a specific user’s journey and influence they have on an interface. Some of the issues I ran into had to deal with the font size, the colors and the icons to achieve the overall feel of the app. I need to work on and focus on the questions to ask users as I’m gathering feedback. More testing and research is something I wish I could manage better.
